The Light Between Oceans
by M.L. Stedman
Several people have compared The Light Between Oceans to The Snow Child by Ivey. Both books are about a child who suddenly appears in the life of a childless couple. Both are set in the 1920s in harsh isolated landscapes. But this is where the similarities end.
The Snow Child is a dream-like fairy tale. It requires suspension of belief and allows the reader to fall into the story. Yes there are issues that we can relate to - loneliness, hardship, etc, but the story does not require soul-searching.
The Light Between Oceans is a more demanding read. The issues of war, prejudice, grief, loyalty and love play out over the course of the story. You cannot help but imagine yourself in similar circumstances. It is a book that promotes thought.
I enjoyed both of these books immensely, but in completely different ways.
