The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
4.0
I found that especially after just finishing When Breath Becomes Air, it was interesting to contrast the depictions of the medical world between the two books.
The Golden Son has a realness and a desperation to Anil's first years of practice. It feels very genuine as he stumbles and attempts to find his footing in the new world of America and in the hospital.
It was also fascinating as a glimpse into Indian culture. The arbitrations and daily life in his small village back home gave me a better understanding of his personal struggles and of his character and contrasted his personality and views with that of Lina, the other main character, whose story was heartbreaking.
I very much enjoyed reading this book!
