Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Frist off, the way the book ends is an awful area to cut the first volume. I'm not sure why Seven Seas opted to end it there, as it doesn't register as a cliffhanger or anything - it's an awkward spot to leave on. Truly a disservice to the rest of the book.

Solid worldbuilding and set up. I love that it actually allows the reader to comprehend the sects and the relationships between them. The complexity of the relationship between Mo Xi and Gu Mang is so intriguing, with multiple layers surrounding Mo Xi's struggle with defining how he feels toward Gu Mang. I will say that I found the
continuous punishment and torture of Gu Mang
a bit redundant, dragging sometimes. There are many ways to get the point across and personally I felt that the author tried a little too hard to make the reader sympathize with Gu Mang. Mo Xi is a great main character, but definitely not for everyone. His internal conflict can make him borderline unlikeable quite often. I am a fan of characters that are a mess with a solid poker face so it lands great with me.

This was something I read on a whim because it was available and now I need to read volume 2.
