The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
5.0
This is a great novel that spins wildly from the magical powers of the devil to the disturbed conscience of Pontius Pilate in 33 AD Jerusalem. The storylines collide in 1940s Moscow, where the Soviet Union has ironclad but inept authority over literature and apartments. Jesus provides the true moral force, and he lets Pilate off the hook.
There is lots to take in. Intertextual references to Faust, Pushkin, Dosteovsky, and of course, the Bible kept me Googling. Read it twice and buy a study guide.
