The Prophet of Edan
by Philip Chase
The Prophet of Edan picks up right where we left off and continues down the path of mythic, epic fantasy. The descriptions of scenery and the slower moving plot are still there. The big epic battles and skirmishes are there. We also get some magical training which I always seem to enjoy, and this book is no different in that regard. There are dragons and romance, there is found family and self-discovery. It just hits a lot of the notes that I have come to know and love. Throughout the slow build of this book, we largely get single perspective chapters that tend to be a bit longer than the standard these days. And for most of the novel, the various character arcs proceed down an interesting if not straightforward path. But then, in the final two chapters we get all the perspectives jumping around by page breaks between the POVs. It was used wonderfully to play out the climax events and I had to stay up late the night I got to this point to get through it all. I was just too invested at that point. I had to know what happened. Also, I did not entirely expect everything that was occurring this late in the novel. It sets up the final installment to be something that might be rather different than these first two. I've already purchased book three and plan to read it late this year or early next.
The Edan Trilogy continues to feel like coming home for me. It hits certain story beats, it pays homage to some of my favorites, and it is well crafted. Having nostalgia for a series that I’m reading for the first time is a strange feeling, but it is one that I am adoring so far.
