Still Life by Louise Penny

5.0

How have I not read a Louise Penny before now? What have I been doing for the past 27 years?

I picked this book up at one of the U of T book sales last summer and finally got around to reading it since I'm trying really hard to actually read the books on my shelves during this pandemic. If I can't do it now, when will I?

I'd heard good things about this Inspector Gamache series, but wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. There are a lot of these detective types in mystery/thrillers and it's hard to form an attachment to them when they're always the same or are often written as jerks, but I really liked Gamache. He's tough, but fair and does what he believes is right even when it isn't going to serve him. And it's refreshing to see him in a healthy relationship with his wife. I feel like a lot of these guys are written as divorced or bachelors.

I loved the town of Three Pines, it felt like a Gilmore Girls-esque Stars Hollow, a town where everyone knows everyone and there are some real characters. Also the fact that the book is set in Canada! It was interesting to read about the French/English language and politics.

Glad I finally gave this one a read and am looking forward to all one thousand and one other books in this series!
