forever_day 's review for:
Anne of the Island
by L.M. Montgomery
This was a reread, and I loved it even more than I remembered. This is the Anne book that matches most closely with my life right now and that added a whole extra layer of enjoyment for me. The studying, the growing up and finding your own feet were all just so applicable to my life right now. I actually wish there was a little more of the actual studying (her second year was barely mentioned) as it was nice to see how that looked a hundred years ago and all the ways it is the same and different. Her writing dreams also hit close to home (& I am sad that they were mostly abandoned in the later Anne stories). Generally, it was pretty wonderful experiencing a book written over a century ago striking so many chords with me.
All in all, I loved this first reread & it is very much a comfort book for me.
(I also had not appreciated on my first read-through how Montgomery weaves little Christian references in in a fairly consistent manner throughout. For example:
-‘I don’t believe Old Nick can be so very ugly,’ said Aunt Jamesina reflectively. ‘He wouldn’t do so much harm if he was. I always think of him as a rather handsome gentleman.’
-A sentence from a very old, very true, very wonderful Book came to her lips.)
