The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister
2.0
This started so strong for me. The cover is stunning. The atmosphere was so compelling I just wanted to know more and more but as we got into the story, the siblings are all sad, kinda horrible people. Nora-f you girl, I couldn’t stand your whiny ass. I will be thinking about Charlie’s poor testicle for a while. Michael deserved better. I would feel sad for them if they weren’t such worthless people but they did nothing the entire book almost? Like how are you just gonna stay in a house with holes in it? And then move to a GOAT SHACK when said house basically falls down? The ending was a mess for me. I wanted so much more. This was pitched as an Appalachian, gothic, horror and if it had stayed that way (it seemed like one in the beginning) I think it would’ve been a 5 star read for me. But as it was, I’d call this more contemporary with a little magical realism and that’s not my jam. The ending also left me with so many questions. Why did the original Charles change his name? How was the compact even made? Why didn’t a wife come out for Charlie? How am I supposed to believe that Charlie, a man who can’t walk by himself at the beginning of this book, a many with no drivers license, birth certificate, education etc is going off in the world alone and sending the girls money? Is Michael gonna come save Eda and Wenna? Or does Eda have to raise her baby in the goat shack? I wanted more from this.
