Wicked by Gregory Maguire
4.0
I’ve had this book on my TBR for years. I never felt like tackling it though. Until, of course, the movie came out. After seeing the movie and developing a true Wicked obsession where I’ve listened to nothing but the soundtrack for over a week, I decided it was finally time to read the book.
The musical and book are NOTHING alike. This is one of those adaptations where only the names are the same. Part of me was hoping they would at least be a little similar because I really want to know what happens in the second movie (which is sort of funny given the fact that I’ve technically seen the musical live on its Broadway tour… it was just so long ago that I do not remember a single thing…) but oh well.
After seeing the movie, I’m not going to lie, the first half of this book was a bit rough. The musical version was much more exciting and seemed to be more of a fun backstory of The Wizard of Oz. This book was a world unto itself. But once we got to the post Shiz part of the story, I actually started to really like it. I lovedElphaba’s rebel work and her affair with Fiyero and her journey to see his widow. I liked the ending with Dorothy.
Now I’ll have to wait a year for the movie sequel like everyone else to know what happens next in that version… meanwhile I will continue to obsess over the soundtrack 🙃
