If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

4.0

This was a solid read. I really enjoyed myself reading it. I loved the writing and the structure - I don’t care for Shakespeare but still found it nice just skimming all the quotes. I liked the way the characters were not flawless and I liked the way the insanity got worse and worse the further we went along. It was part a murder mystery (maybe less so) and part a psychological study of guilt.

Overall I thought it was really good. I think it deserves a four star rating just for the writing not making me want to slap all the characters. And I did really like it.

Now... the ending. There will be spoilers going forward.

What the fuck? I kind of don’t really know what to think. I hate martyrs, and I hated it in this book too.

I think I would have liked it better if I believed it more, but there wasn’t spent nearly enough time to develop the two characters’ more than friendly feelings for me to believe he would do something like that. It just felt like every indication that they were in love with each other was a feeling in the stomach and the touch of a hand and the quoting of Shakespeare? I wish there had been more, I wish there had been a declaration of love BEFORE he went to prison, and BEFORE the other one died.

Sorry but it was so fucking stupid. But I guess it’s Shakespeare and he even compared his actions to Romeo and Juliet, so, on brand I guess?
