Genesis by Brendan Reichs

After the big reveal in the first book, I was wondering what path this second book would take.
It didn't quite go the way I initially wanted it to go. But I kept on reading and accepted it for what it offered me instead.

And what it offered me was a really good idea of transferring the consciousness of humans into a supercomputer -because the earth is about to be destroyed by a meteor-, so it can later be downloaded into a new human -clone- body when the earth is habitable again.
I like how it explained most of the mysteries from part 1, but there are still some issues I have with the story.

My main issue is why the digital consciousness needs to be of these kids specifically.
One of the inventors of Project Nemesis -The Guardian- explains why Min is chosen -and therefore her class- and he says that the optimal number for regeneration is twenty.
So they uploaded sixty minds into the cloud, but only twenty can be downloaded.
This means that in Phase 2 of Project Nemesis the kids turn on eachother and they have to kill eachother so the ones who are best at adapting and surviving will go back to earth.

But what I don't get is, why do they leave the fate of humanity rest in the incapable hands of children?
Why not have a team of special forces or professionals live happily in the digital world and bide their time until they can return to earth? These people then know what is actually going on, there should be no confusion or violence and they can just happily await their time be restored to their bodies.
One thing The Guardian said proved my point even more: "I'm not going to jeopardize everything I ever worked for -including my daughter's life- and the future of humanity, on some sentimental high school bullshit". This came from someone who willingly and knowingly chose the highschoolers as subjects for Project Nemesis.

And finally when Phase 2 is complete, it turns out that twenty isn't the magic number. So everything in Phase 2 seems kind of pointless in hindsight. It made me a bit dissapointed and frustrated to learn that everything they have done in Phase 2 was basically for no reason at all.

Overall this book was enjoyable, it reads very easily and is fast paced but my main issue with the plot prevented me from enjoying it more than it deserves.
