Even when I was younger and first read these, the series began falling apart here, becoming more like every other rebels vs aliens shtick series out there.

But a lot of that could be from the fact that I'd recently seen Battlefield Earth and thought that mutant psychic spiders rated about the same as gold-hungry dread-locked alien overlords on the credibility scale.
