Mariana by Susanna Kearsley

5.0

I have read it countless times over the more than 20 years I’ve owned this book as it is a comforting read for me.

It’s set in a small English village, where everyone knows each other. The FMC, Julia, starts to revisit a previous life - the Mariana of the title - and as she spends more time in the past, there are implications for her present life

One of the elements I love about the story is that when Julia visits the past, what she physically does in the past is also done in the present. For example, she doesn’t just open a gate in her mind, in the present, she is actually opening a gate. So this makes for some interesting situations where Julia is seen walking along roads, enters buildings, etc all while her mind is reliving Mariana’s life.

It’s a lovely story, comforting and a fairly quick read for me now since I’m so familiar with it and can skim read and not miss anything.
