The Vanishing of Aveline Jones by Phil Hickes

3.0

If this is the conclusion to the series I am at peace with it, because once again Hickes wrote a fantastic friendship, coming of age, face your fears, spooky middle grade story that I’ll be recommending for years to come. However if he ever wanted to continue the series I would be on board with that too. It doesn’t truly feel like an end, but it’s ok if it is. If you enjoyed The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black then you might like this story as well. They have the dark fairies trope and even though it felt similar it also felt unique.

Aveline, her mum and aunt are headed to her uncle’s abandoned house to box up his belongings and sell his house. It’s been 10 years since anyone has seen or heard from him. Aveline loves a good mystery and is hoping that she can discover what happened to her uncle once and for all. When she finds her way into his locked study she begins noticing some strange things that point her to a local prehistoric monument. Soon she and her companion are lured in by dark magical forces and she must keep her wits about her in order to make it out alive.
