Story of My Life by Lucy Score

4.0

For a romance novel, there was a lot of world building in this one, and it was kind of slow to start. I was confused about everyone’s ages until like 3/4 into the book when we finally learned Cam’s backstory, and just how deep his fear of abandonment goes. Those are my only complaints though. I can picture this one being a movie, or a cute tv show on Netflix that lasts for too many seasons, but you keep watching anyway because you just love everyone, even though Cam is an ass. He really straddles the line of grumpy and dickbag. I enjoyed Hazel, and loved watching her come into herself after her ex gaslighted her for so long. I wish we saw Cam punch him.
One of my favorite things is absurd shenanigans, and Lucy does such a great job with this. From the eagle named Goose dropping fish on residents, to the disaster that was the towns Memorial Day fair, to the dog sleeping in the bath tub, and Hazel trying to get him out only to be caught by Cam, this is where Lucy shines for me. They’re my favorite parts of any of her books, and this one was chock full of examples. I enjoyed the nods to schitts creek, and parks and rec also. I do wish we had gotten a little bit more view of Emilie being punished for working with the town of Dominion though. Maybe in Zoey and Gage’s book.
Overall I really enjoyed this one. Yes it was long, but I expect that in a Lucy score novel. It’s still a fast read, and while I think some could have been cut off the beginning, I also think some could have been added to the end, so I’m just gonna call it even.
