The City We Became
by N.K. Jemisin
Incredibly engaging and vaguely mind-blowing. All the thrill of the latest shiny Netflix drama, but with much stronger personality and an unmistakeable sense of place. Devoured this in two days.
It did feel intensely low-stakes and there was some repetitiveness to the easy defeats (And I'd argue that the thematic concern of gentrification feels somewhat... underdeveloped aside from some background and allegorical highlighting of its existence?) but this is some of the best non-literary fiction I've read in a long time.
