4.75/5 - i will say i’m still new to the historical fiction genre, but wow. this is the first kristin hannah book i’ve read and it was overall heart wrenching and beautifully written. the depictions of infirmary were gory and graphic, but that was to be expected. i could feel the stress, sadness, grief, and anger that was depicted in this book. her deep research was shown while talking of war events, the news coverage, and PTSD.

i was kind of disappointed in the romance part, as i do not condone adultery, and there were some cliches that were pretty predictable.

overall a very emotional and reflective book that shines light on parts of the vietnam war that have not been talked about much or ever. it’s also quite readable for anyone who wants to get into this genre.

________
**slight spoiler** in hindsight, i should have looked up trigger warnings as there were talks about substance abuse, adultery, suicide, and addiction.
