The first part of this story was soooo cheesy! Brandon and Lennon were new in love, newly moved in together, they were planning for a future together, and like all new couples, they were all lovey dovey, going at it like rabbits, all the time doing cutesy couples stuff and endearments. Their unlucky roommate Hunter was witness to all this explosion of feelings, made even worse by the fact that he also had feelings for Lennon. Two years ago, he saw her first at the bar where he worked to help pay college costs. In a moment of insecurity, he didn’t act on his attraction, asking for her phone number, and he lost because at the end of the night, his roommate Brandon scored and got the girl. So what does Hunter do to compensate for the fact that he’s attracted to the same girl? He acts like an asshole to her, makes her life hell when she moved into the house with them. It’s his form of a barrier so he’ll never be tempted to cross over the line and make a move on her. Brandon is his best friend and he will respect that or die, so he’ll be the bad one.
Then Brandon dies and Hunter is left with a horrible situation, a devastated woman, and a hole in his heart where his friend used to reside. Now Hunter has to overcome his crushing sadness and be the support for this woman who has just lost her future. So from cheesy we move over to angsty and this author duo make a brilliant change of pace, from laughing at Hunter’s antics, to admire and love Hunter’s strength and purpose in protecting and helping Lennon.
I already liked Hunter from the prequel Forever Mine, and in this book I liked him even more. He was honorable in his respect for his best friend’s love even though living with them both in the house was a living hell. He endured as well he could, and when tragedy struck he was a hero. I loved how he faced and overcame the heartbreak, how he was strong and supportive for Lennon and how he was giving and considerate.
The book ends in a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, as expected, with an unexpected surprise. Well done!
