The Queen's Secret
by Melissa de la Cruz
I was really intrigued by the premise of the first book and couldn’t wait to dive into this one. Unfortunately, it started off very slow, and I was left wanting more from the climactic battle at the end. There were missed opportunities for the protagonist to prove herself and for the king to truly step up.

In my ideal ending, Lilac and the king would have faced the big bad together (I read this book a while ago and I can’t recall exactly what the creature was), faking her death in the process so she could disappear. The king, now reformed after saving his kingdom, would take his role more seriously, while she and Cal could reunite in a secluded cabin in the woods to live a peaceful, happy life. Let’s be honest—Lilac from book 1 was never meant to be confined to castle life.
