The Late Mrs. Willoughby by Claudia Gray

4.0

This second entry in the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney mystery series is as delightful as the first. Perfect for Jane Austen fans.

The setting for this mystery is the Sense and Sensibility universe. After Willoughby's aunt finally dies,  he and his wife, Sophia, move into Allenham, which is located very close to Marianne and Colonel Brandon's estate. To celebrate his new status, Willoughby invites some his school friends for a long stay. Among them is Jonathan Darcy. Meanwhile, Juliet Tilney is staying with the Brandons, solidifying her new friendship with Marianne.

The plot, as the title says, involves the murder of Sophia Willoughby. Jonathan and Juliet can't resist teaming up again to solve the mystery.

As with the first book, it was fun to see the S&S and other Austen characters in a new story. Gray does a good job maintaining the spirit and personalities first created by Austen. In addition, the mystery is nicely developed and not easy to figure out.

Finally, one of the best part of the series is the development of Jonathan Darcy's character. He's clearly on the spectrum, and his parents have given him much love and support and have helped him come up with coping mechanisms. His relationship with Juliet seems authentic, and I love how she reacts to Jonathan's unique quirks.

Can't wait for the next book!

I was happy to discover that narrator Billie Fulford-Brown returns to perform this second audiobook in the series. I appreciate her consistent voices and the way she captures the spirit of the book. I hope she's back for book 3.
