I LOVED THIS BOOK! i am not particularly a fan of fantasy books but jesus did hayley do a great job at immersing readers like me. automatically from her marketing on tiktok i was on board. lesbians, harlem renaissance, VAMPIRES, my type of party.
the vampire lore was unique and had contextual grounding in the plot. it wasn’t simply reused tropes.
this was another book where i started to care deeply about the characters — which is actually VERY rare for me. about 40% through, i knew it was going to be a 5/5. the way the plot was so rich with conflict and emotion was… wow, simply wow. hayley is a genius and i am shocked that the rating for this book isn’t higher.
as someone who understand the unrequited bff love situation, it was perfect. bffs -> enemies -> lovers..? my only critique is the continuous emotion for thalia throughout.
i will say if you’re looking for romance, this book is about 30% romance, 70% plot. but it is actually a really good balance. i love layla and elise so much.
elise’s internal dialogue is beautiful, the way hayley could describe her torment was so… genius.
of course as with all 3rd person books i struggled with enjoying that element but nonetheless. congratulations hayley, this was beautifully written. cant wait for pt2!
