My Boat by Joanna Russ

4.0

An interesting fantasy that’s tangentially a Cthulhu mythos story. It’s about the power of belief, ultimately, although it takes awhile to get there for you to understand that about it. I liked the verisimilitude. Russ captures a certain 1960s nostalgia that doesn’t necessarily sugar-coat the issues, although it tones them down because it’s not about necessarily the cultural hot spots, although they are a story influence. I’m not totally sure about the framing device of the writer talking to his agent, which enables Russ to tell the whole thing in that first person, casual way, which I suppose she chose because of the unreal elements of part of the story.
