The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy is a fantasy, enemies to lovers but not really, and witty new release by Brigitte Knightley. With all the hype that preceded the release of this book, I was so disappointed to not have enjoyed the story more than I did.

I can definitely see the appeal of why some readers would like this. The world is explained relatively well and it is easy to follow along, the characters are witty and stubborn, and you can easily see where the slow burn is meant to take place.

Unfortunately, it was just not my taste. I found the humour rather forward, very sexual, and I struggled to feel the chemistry between the main characters. While it was heavily pushed to be an “enemies to lovers” novel, I cannot agree with this as you could hardly call them enemies at any point in the book. I think “enemies” to friends could have suited them a bit better.

It was not all bad though: as a healthcare worker myself, I enjoyed the medical references and really resonated with the way that Aurienne cared for her patients and pushed for better funding and resources. There were also times when the story felt very academia heavy, which I also did not mind as I enjoy this genre but the theme/topic switching felt a bit jarring at times.

Reading the story reminded me a lot of James Bond or other British action movies/comedy movies because that is the voice in which the characters were written. I enjoyed this as it helped set the scene and also makes the story stand out from other recent fantasies.

As this is the first book in a duology, it inevitably ends on a cliffhanger. Sadly, I do not find myself itching for the next book nor do I think that I will pick it up once it is out.
