I had a similar problem with this one, like I had with A Flat Place (which is a memoir, not a novel though). I was really interested in the core topic of the story, but the merge with another thread, didn't really work for me and took more away from the power of the novel, than it added to it. Apart from some forced metaphors, the writing is strong. The personal becoming political, is always something I'm interested in, but trying to create a connection to the polyamorous relationship, didn't work for me and has been the weaker part of this novel. I would have been perfectly fine with the historical aspects connected to the family history. And with the polyamorous experience being left as the story for another book, because it is definitely an interesting topic too, but it felt too short here, to be really have its merit.
