A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian follows sisters Nadezhda (Nadia) and Vera as they grapple with the chaos sparked by their elderly father Nicolai’s impulsive and unwelcome marriage to a much younger woman, the flamboyant and scheming Valentina. Convinced she’s a gold-digger, the sisters unite in an uneasy alliance to oust her - though doing so proves more complicated than expected.

Woven throughout the narrative is a thread of 20th-century Ukrainian history (and yes, tractors!), adding depth and context to the family drama. I especially appreciated the gradual thaw in the sisters' strained relationship, which felt genuine and hard-won. I did feel that the pacing lagged in places, and some sections felt drawn out, but overall it was a decent story.
