Review of “Surviving The City: Volume 2”

How I read: 📖

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Rating System Below)

Surviving the City: Volume 2 by Tasha Spillett is a powerful and heartfelt continuation of Miikwan and Dez’s story. I was especially moved by how the novel explores Dez’s journey of self-discovery as a Two-Spirit person, capturing the emotional complexities of her identity with both tenderness and authenticity. The way it addresses cultural expectations and the struggles of being accepted by one’s own community really stood out to me, making this installment even more profound than the first.

What I loved most about this volume was how it highlighted the importance of community and support in a young person’s life. The dynamics between Miikwan and Dez are so relatable, as Miikwan tries to understand and be there for her best friend, even though she doesn’t fully grasp what Dez is going through. It felt real and grounded in the realities many face when dealing with both grief and identity. The inclusion of Elder Linda added depth, showing the generational challenges around understanding and embracing modern identity in traditional cultural contexts.

Overall, this graphic novel does a beautiful job of blending important social themes with personal storytelling. It doesn’t shy away from the hardships of navigating identity and community, while also celebrating resilience and friendship. The art remains stunning, and I found myself reflecting deeply on the importance of allyship and cultural acceptance long after finishing it. A must-read for anyone wanting a meaningful and thought-provoking experience.
