This book. Wow. This is the story of Dana, a Black woman in the 1970’s who keeps getting pulled back into the 1800’s by her white, slave-owning ancestor in order for her to save his life again and again. She is caught because if he dies before his daughter, Hagar, is born then Dana doesn’t exist in the 1970’s. Technically considered science-fiction, this was a powerful and painful story to read. It filled me with dread and anxiety and by that definitely was successful in its goal. It feels like this should definitely be on reading lists for schools as important education around slavery and systematic racism. Octavia Butler was a genius.
