Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

5.0

I remembered very little of this book, which amazes me because it's so wonderful! I love it! It hasn't displaced Pride and Prejudice as my favourite Jane Austen novel, but it might actually be an objectively better one — and it's up there on my shelf of favourites. It has all the awkward social situations and the subtle conversations of P&P, but the characters are exceptionally well drawn, especially that of Fanny. But even the minor characters have depth to them. (Much better than Sense and Sensibility, which I recently re-read too. There are no one-dimensional characters in Mansfield Park.) The story is excellent too. If I didn't already know who married whom, I wouldn't have been able to predict — but everything that happens makes sense, given what we know of all the characters involved. And everything is tied up nice and neatly — and mostly happily — by the end. :)
