After Story
by Larissa Behrendt
After Story follows First Nations mother and daughter, Della and Jasmine, as they embark on a tour of significant literary sites around England in an effort to reconnect following the death of Jasmine’s father. 25 years earlier, Jasmine’s sister disappeared in their country hometown and the tragedy reverberated within the family and community, irrevocably changing their relationships and lives.
The story of their travels is supported by historical detail regarding the literary figures and places of western history that they are visiting and is paired alongside the oral histories and teachings from their own family and culture, and I adored this focus on intergenerational storytelling. The structure of the book is brilliant and engaging, and Behrendt’s insight into human relationships and the process of grief was truly touching.
Behrendt’s writing is raw and beautiful, and the characters of Della and Jasmine will nestle into your heart and take hold. This is a powerful story and one I won’t be forgetting - I need to read more of Larissa Behrendt’s work!
TWs include child abuse, death, alcoholism, loss of a loved one, grief
