When I read the Twilight series last year I found Edward awfully predatory (i mean he is literally a predator) but Stephanie Meyer wrote this book in order to convince people that the story would be the same had the genders been reversed. In this version everyone’s genders have been reversed (except for Charlie and Renee), and everyone has a stupid gender swapped name that starts with the same letter. The plot was very similar to the original, with the same scenes and even some of the same dialogue from the original story. I was hoping for an interesting exploration into gender roles but instead I found myself fixating on all of the details that Meyer changed that revealed her own gender biases (why didn’t Beau take dance lessons at the studio in Phoenix?) or felt unnatural and forced, further proving how the original story relied on the characters genders and the societal perception of gender (when Beau gets lost in port angeles and Edythe comes to save him). This whole book felt like Twilight fanfiction and a cash grab.
