Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
4.0
i really enjoyed reading little women for the most part, all 600 pages of it. i feel like some parts were a little too long and went on for a few pages too many, but i know there are lots of different editions out there. i do feel like it wouldn't be the same without all its preaching and long character descriptions.
i just watched the movie so i had to read the book and i'm so glad i did! the movie and book both were really feel good and heart warming and i loved timothee chalamet as laurie :)))
the characters in the book felt so real to me and they were so well described. one of the things that stood out to me is how similar the characters are to people i know, which just goes to show how well louisa may alcott created them. they all have their flaws but i liked the chapters towards the beginning where they each made a mistake and learned from it, with their mother to help them. the character development was really strong in this book.
one thing, that i'm not really surprised about is that although its supposed to be pretty inspiring to girls, it still had that idea that girls should be quiet and patient, and while jo still remained an interesting character she became less so throughout the book, like all the characters just got less interesting and kind of blended into one by the end, which got boring.
but overall i liked the authors style of writing, it felt so personable with her random narratives and it felt like i was getting to know the characters so well. i think little women will always be relevant because of its morals and lessons scattered through, and while some were questionable i loved how she talked about marrying for love, not money, and showed jo being able to make money on her own. there were lots of old fashioned ideas, but i expected that from a book from that time, and overall really enjoyed it!
