White Hot Kiss
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
This was so much fun. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a paranormal book. After my Twilight phase I kind of stayed away from them because they kind of started to be similar to each other. But when I heard about this book back in, I think, 2014 I knew I had to read it. It took me four years to finally read it and I’m a little mad at myself for that because this was so good. It deals with gargoyles which is something I have not since being done in YA before or even in adult books (I could be totally wrong and there may be others out there, so if anyone knows please let me know I’d like to check them out). If you’re someone like me who grew up with the tv show this will bring back memories and some nostalgia. While it’s completely different from the show, just it being about gargoyles will just bring back memories of the show. That’s why I had to give this five stars because it was different and new it wasn’t like other paranormal YA books that deal with vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of the night. With that said there are some problems with it that if I had read this four years ago I would not have fully picked up on or might have just ignored all together. One of those issues being that Layla kind of felt like a damsel in distress more than half the time. She does fight off the demons and other people that are after her but Roth or Zayne always seem to just come and help her out because she can’t do it all on her own. In even in the end when she is the one to help them both out, the other Wardens (that’s the name of the gargoyles in the book) come to help her out in the end. The girl deserved a shining moment of being able to fully defend herself and others. I also didn’t like that Roth felt like kind of a stalker at first. Yes we find out he was sent to watch and protect but at first it was creepy and not cool. It’s also a reason we don’t get to see Layla fight her own battles. I will also say that book starts off kind of slow and is hard to get into but once it gets going it’s a fun ride. But even with those issues it’s still a lot of fun and I’m so excited to see where this series goes.
