Pride by Ibi Zoboi

5.0

This book made me so happy.

It had:
Pride and Prejudice vibes through and through
Full-of-life characters that reminded me of the Bennetts and Darcys
It had suuuuuuch a lively, soulful, Haitian-Dominican Republican twist that was the more sophisticated contemporary I was hunting for.

I have read and watched all the versions of P&P and this ticked the boxes for me, while giving me a new story to track. Um, and can we talk about the poetry in the form of haikus and spoken word?! YESSSSS. This book had so much flavor, so much to see, taste, and feel. I've never been to Brooklyn or grown up on a street with that much personality, and I was nodding along, like I knew the guys outside the corner store and how they are the way they are.

The pride vs prejudice take in this culturally rich story was so unique and needed. It touched on gentrification, culture identity, and class in a way I really appreciated. Darius (Will Darcy) isn't just rich, he's changing the block that Zuri (Elizabeth Bennett) has always known and love. Darius' mannerisms are so far removed from what she's seen in her neighborhood that she takes it as looking down on the people and way of life she identifies with.

I can't read late into the night usually and I was 130 pages to go and stayed up in 1 a.m. finishing this one. Was thinking 4.5 stars but after reviewing, it deserves the full 5.
