Attack on Titan, Volume 14 by Hajime Isayama

4.0

Probably 3.5 stars, as this volume leans heavily on interpersonal scenes and frontloads a ton of exposition for a new plot thread that sees our Survey Squad conspiring against the king. However, watching these characters justify the means to their ends and coming up depressed about it ("We're not good people") to the point that the funniest punchline is 'the naive character is a more sinister planner than we realized.' The tradeoff is that everyone's motives are colored with shades more varied than "hates titans," which is a welcome expansion of everyone's dialog and decisions. I enjoyed putting together Erwin's plot without it being outright told to me - readers have to link two separate pieces of dialog together to reveal what will (probably?) happen next volume. This series does not have to go all-out bombastic with titan showdowns to win me over - I appreciate sharpening knives in the dark, too.

Oh, right: there are still a zillion little questions and plot gaps that Isayama does not care to address yet, which is fine so long as he keeps this production entertaining, and this portion has a big cliffhanger to ensure exactly that.
