Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale
by John Steptoe
Beautiful illustrations and nice to have an African setting, but unfortunate that one daughter is "all bad" and the other "all good". When I talk to my niece (the main audience for these children's books), I often remind her that not everything is a contest and you don't need to always make someone "bad" and someone else "good." This book definitely contradicts the message, since the "mean sister" ends up as a servant in her sister's palace. How about a little redemption, folks?
