Reading this brought a depressing outlook of the world. Where optimism is often celebrated, depressive state is inherently strong. In this context as a person who was belonged to the roots of victims of colonialism of Japan, one could not but to relate the situation and sacrifices of ancestors despite being multiple generations away since world war 2.
All the suffering and pain felt true and connected. Yet, at times I could not understand why people from the past had a sliver of stubborness attached into their culture and ego that frustrated me . Perhaps it was how author created tension and life into the characters.
Reading this did not bring joy and it just heightened the feeling of resentment and envy about how some people were just unfortunate to be born at a state of despair without gotten to choose where they were born. This book was rated high because it was so relatable.
