The Monster by L.J. Shen
3.0

Where to begin? First, I was not really excited about this book. The whole obssessed girl plot is not really my thing, so my hopes were low. Maybe that's why I don't have any strong feelings about this book, and I actually liked it a little more than I thought I would.

That being said, I don't know how this is a romance. I liked the characters individually, especially Aisling, who was not like I thought. Sam was a good character too I liked that both of them had an interesting backstorys. But for the most part of the book, I couldn't see them as a couple. They didn't had any moments of chemistry or tension, and I didn't feel any build up for their relationship. It felt like only the last 20% of the book was really a romance.

The mistery thing worked, and it was very interesting and unexpected for Aisling's character. She was a good surprise, even though sometimes I felt like her attitudes were confusing, but I guess that's life. I don't mind a poor sad rich girl/boy in fiction, it usually make them interesting. Sam was just another version of all os LJ males, but we are used to that.

Mu main concern here is that this book did not set any grounds for The Rake. Emabelle was barely mentioned, and so was Devon. They had much more page time in The Villain, which makes me think that maybe their book should came after Persy and Cillian. If It had not been already interested in the characters, there was nothing here to make me anticipate the next book.

This was a fitting 3 star read. Not memorable, not bad (like The Hunter was).
