This was a strong book for me - I especially liked the detective plot that was driving a lot of what happened. I also liked the exploration of duty to family and the things you do to hold onto family, how hard it is to reckon with different versions of people you love, how warm and safe it feels to know your family supports and loves you, how quickly you can become attached to someone even if you’re not expecting it, how to learn to live bravely again after trauma and tragedy, the love of a father (or father-figure) for their daughter, how honesty and knowing is good but can also hurt, how falling in love is a lot like learning to care about someone and their needs before thinking of your own, the almost false sense of security that comes with escapism, the resignation that comes with knowing it’s time to move on but realizing you’ll be stuck with the weight of it, and the beautiful simplicity of asking someone if they’re okay even if their answer is a half truth.
I think the only reason it’s not a five star for me is it felt a tad insta love-y, or just they slept together really quickly and were just like “you’re hot” “you’re hot too” “let’s bang it out.” and while it did grow into something more, that was not as fathomable for me - for obvious reasons to myself.
I did love the writing style and all the little Lyla & Vance moments. The nickname he had for her was pretty cheesy, but there were a lot of gestures both of them did that got me. I think I really liked how the author focused on their ability to physically pick up on signals and comfort immediately. They learned each other’s body language and eye colors/meanings.
The end of the book heavily alluded to the last book in the series, especially considering who it’s about. Sad the series is coming to an end but excited to read what happens next. It feels like I’ve watched a whole family grow up in front of my eyes.
