Captured by Beverly Jenkins

I read Captured to fulfill this year's Book Riot Read Harder Challenge - challenge #16 is to read a historical romance by an author of colour - and I'm really glad I chose this novel to do so. I've read a bit of romance before, years ago, and didn't expect to enjoy the historical romance genre at all. The period of history this is set in, though, absolutely made it for me. How well researched it is shines through. The themes of piracy, slavery, and the American Civil War kept me interested where historical romances about kings, counts, and duchesses in England wouldn't have. The author's note talks about LeVeq's ship being based on a real slaver-turned-pirate ship, the Whydah from the 1710s, and Jenkins provides a bibliography of her resources. Taking part in this particular challenge has definitely widened my reading horizons, and I'm sure I'll seek out more from Jenkins in the future.
