I struggled with this book, despite it being by one of my favourite authors. At first I thought it was just because it was a “modern” fantasy -and I do think that plays a part- but actually I think this book was at least partially written by AI. The sentence structures, punctuation, and dialogue just felt very lacking- and a lot of the foreshadowing was incredibly obvious. The plot was engrossing, if a little slow at times. Though many of the twists were predictable, it often wasn’t until they were near being revealed - which is a classic Watson device in what is essentially a fantasy romance buddy-cop mystery.
