Showa: A History of Japan, 1926-1939 by Shigeru Mizuki

5.0

Showa 1926 - 1939 is a graphic novel detailing the history of Japan. It is also an autobiography of an artist coming of age in the lead up to WW2. Muzuki juxtaposes photorealistic drawings and prints alongside cartoonish renditions of his childhood misadventures. This was a thoughtful, moving work of art; a meditation on the blind stupidity of war that I thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely read again.
