The Phoenix Crown
by Janie Chang, Kate Quinn
The Phoenix Crown follows four women (Suling, Nellie, Gemma, and Alice) before, during, and after the infamous 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The story follows the women as they encounter a greedy villain who would do anything to keep his money status, including taking advantage of a natural disaster.
This book touches on themes of the racism that the Chinese suffered and how they were treated during the earthquake. It also showed how women that were successful in their careers were considered to be “loose” and not knowing what was good for them.
I will say that I expected the police to be depicted as more corrupt than they were depicted but then I realized that the officer that was the most helpful also became private detective.
Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot even though it was outside of my normal read. If you like historical fiction, I definitely recommend you read this!
