The Secret Adversary
by Agatha Christie
I first came across Tommy and Tuppence in 2015 when I watched the BBC adaptation with David Walliams and Jessica Raine. I loved it at the time and made a note to pick up the books at some point in the future. Only now have I gotten round to doing so and unfortunately the first book was not what I was hoping for.
The plot didn't hold my interest and that combined with a lack of logic in the actions of the characters made it hard for me to follow. Considering it is a short book, it took me way too long to get through it. Both Tommy and Tuppence were constantly running into danger without considering the implications of their actions. As a reader I was shouting at them constantly for each ridiculous decision they made(Clearly Tommy breaking into the secret house was not going to end well for him) Sadly I also didn't find them as likeable as I did in the TV series. They are younger in the book and the naivety and immaturity shows.
I can slightly overlook these points though because it is meant to be a more lighthearted, fun read. What most disappointed me was the mystery element. I guessed early on who Mr Brown was and this almost never happens for me (!). The clues were a bit heavy handed and obvious and not as clever as some other Agatha Christie novels that I have read.
This is a fun lighthearted adventure novel - read it for this and the period setting but not for the mystery element!
