Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman

2.0

I watched the film a couple of years ago and I found it okay (except for the peach scene), when I found a lot of people recommending the book, I thought I would give a shot because I didn’t remember much about the film.
And now after reading it and rewatching the film, I can say that the film is better.

One of the issues of the story was the lack of emotional foundation that should form between them before “falling in love”, it felt like it’s only insta lust and sexual attraction, which made me think that Oliver manipulated 17 year old Elio whose trying to figure out he’s own sexuality and understand he’s feelings. That’s what I didn’t like about the film, that it romanticized this manipulative situation.

I liked the pacing of the film more, because in the book, Elio expressed countless amount of emotions, it was overwhelming and I had to put the book down every couple of pages before I could pick it up again.

I was so uncomfortable reading about that red bathing suit and Elio’s frustration that he didn’t find a pubic hair!. Let alone that peach scene! He said: “The bruised and damaged peach, like a rape victim, lay on its side on my desk, shamed, loyal, aching, and confused, struggling not to spill what I'd left inside.” .. disgusting and inappropriate metaphor.
Then we got to read about Oliver eating that same peach! I literally gaged. And to add to the messed up situation, Elio asked Oliver not to flush because he wanted to see his poop, then asked Oliver to watch him doing the same!!

Andre aceman’s writing style was amazing, pretentious at sometimes, but still beautiful. However, the book was boring, reading it felt like it was 400 pages (it was only 250!). I struggled to finish it and it put me in a reading slump!
