Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return
by Marjane Satrapi
Giving the current situation in Ukraine, it's hard to read a story about a teenager studying abroad while her country's at war with their neighbor, but in some ways it felt like I had to finish this compelling story.
In addition to the basic outlines of a part of recent history I knew very little about, this primarily functions as a coming of age story for Marjane. She finishes high school, returns home, and then has to figure out what's next, whether it's in her country ruled by opressive fundamentalists, or abroad. Her decisions are flavored by her setting, but, ultimately, she faces the same choices all young people face as they decide what path to set their adult life on. I can see why this is considered a classic.
