I went into this book not knowing that it was based on a true story. After living a somewhat charmed life, Marguerite is thrown into the wilderness for the crime of falling in love with her guardian's secretary. She just can't catch a break as life throws her loss after loss after loss.

There are times when the violence gets graphic. But the violence only escalates when Marguerite must survive her harsh circumstances. In spite of every loss, she rises to cling to what's left of herself. It's a harsh journey towards survival.

I would have loved to see her guardian meet a more gruesome end. I just wanted him to suffer. But I'm satisfied that he didn't get his way in the end and that Margeurite was able to obtain a life of her own with the family that she has left.
