Kingdom of the Cursed
by Kerri Maniscalco
this review is filled with spoilers, and disappointment.
i really loved the first book, it was just perfect for me but i honestly think reading this book has ruined it completely for me. i felt like i was reading a totally different book? the plot twists just seemed to change everything in the book, i enjoy a good plot twist but i think i broke my neck from this one.
it was also overly sexual from the start, i didn’t expect to see that since the first book didn’t have any overly sexual passages or scenes. i don’t read smut, that’s my preference but it was really disappointing seeing this great story turned into something i couldn’t enjoy. like every second page had some sexual thought or act being committed, and it was annoying as hell because the main reason she went to the underworld was because she wanted to figure out who murdered her sister… i’m not shaming anyone for scratching an itch however she totally forgot about her sister.
all the clues about her sister were also given to her??? she didn’t really do any work on that part. i was so frustrated that this seemed to be put on the back burner, like how could she keep forgetting the only reason she was in hell??? her sister had physically show up for her to realise why she couldn’t solve the mystery. i mean she couldn’t solve it cause she was too busy thinking about fucking wrath or too busy describing every single piece of clothing.
then there’s the issue of the training that takes place between emilia and wrath, this made me want to rip the book in fucking half like the character of wrath is ruined because of this book. wrath mentions many times in the book how he respects consent and how there’s always a choice, etc.
where was his respect for consent when he used his power to make emilia strip to her underwear in front of him??? if he wanted to show her how powerful a prince’s power could be, couldn’t he have made her act like a dog and bark at him??? couldn’t he have done something other than having her strip against her will???
THEN THERE’S THE GLUTTONY TRAINING SCENE. emilia is drunk, he’s using the power of gluttony on her and things turn sexual, she says she is instantly sober and aware of the choices she’s making. i’ve been in a lot more intoxicated states than emilia was said to be, you do not fucking sober up like that. yes, she does say to wrath to seduce her which is consent in a way however there is one major fatal flaw: he used his powers on her to get her into that state of intoxication, think of a man supplying you with drinks all night until you can barely string a thought together. he was completely sober while she wasn’t.
it really fucking pisses me off when authors, especially women, introduce this into their story and it’s been done before. sarah j maas had a similar scene with feyre being drunk and rhysand taking advantage while under the mountain.
i don’t think this should be considered romance at all, the relationship is mostly sexual like you can’t call that romance.
but to be honest i reached the last chapter and was still thinking: what the fuck is going on? it just wasn’t anything i was expecting, i had hoped we would have gotten to see more the houses and more insight into how the underworld worked, there was so much potential for this and i’m sad to say it fucking did not pass the vibe check at all.
