The Other Side of Night by Adam Hamdy

emotional mysterious tense

2.5

I read this going in completely blind, which I would definitely recommend doing. Unfortunately, this book did not work for me. I found Harriet to be very surface level, and I didn't like the way the author portrayed her as a female protagonist.
It's really difficult to talk about the book without giving away the ending. I did enjoy the "twist" with time travel and the science fiction element, however I didn't think it was well done. I don't need to understand all the science elements but it just was so glossed over that it bothered me. The book reminded me in some ways of Dark Matter, but in that novel, I felt like the science fiction element was much better described and developed. I did like the twist with Ben and Elliot being the same person, but as a character I just did not connect with him at all. The whole book kept going on and on about this secret and it felt underwhelming when it was revealed, even though I didn't necessarily see it coming. I can't get passed how Harriet was so one dimensional and described as this lovesick lonely women, and I did not at all connect with her relationship with Ben.
