I was really disappointed by this book. I'd had it recommended by a friend as something that I would like, but I just thought it was really derivative and unoriginal. It relied a lot on racial stereotypes and the characters felt flat. Both of the main characters are immigrants. The boy's parents are from South Korea and are forcing him to become a doctor. The girl's parents are from Jamaica and her father gets a DUI even though no one ever drives in New York City. I also really disliked how they used stereotypical bad English when any of the parents were talking. The boy's parents would say something like, "Why you no do good in school? Why you no try? You bad student." It just feels like lazy writing. The dialogues were really unnatural and just didn't feel like how people would actually talk. I had to force myself to finish it.
