How to Get Away with Marriage by Fenna Edgewood

5.0

Hugh Cavendish doesn’t really want to marry, but he has to… There’s an inheritance at stake! And he definitely doesn’t want to marry the mean girl who rejected his love in the past, but who’s now determined to cajole a marriage proposal from him. So what’s better than a fake engagement? And what if the fake fiancé is witty and beautiful and kind as well?
Beatrice never thought to accept charming Hugh’s absurd proposal… After all she’s an independent young woman and she has a respectable job as a teacher in a girls’ school. But when fate conspires to make her lose her job, she is forced to accept to be part of the deception… But are her budding feelings for Hugh part of the deception as well?
This was my first book from Fenna and I really loved it! She worked wonders with the fake engagement trope, creating a story who’s very different from others of this type. I particularly loved the mystery surrounding Triss and the fact that her character is hurt, broken, doesn’t trust anyone… And for a good reason! She’ll have to learn to trust again and sweet Hugh is the right hero for her. He’s lovable, kind and a little immature at the beginning, but he’s honorable and can be fiercely protective of the people he loves. A refreshing change from the stereotypical alpha male that I usually enjoy reading about.
Fenna fleshed out two wonderful main characters and a couple of very interesting side characters as well, side characters that I hope we’ll see again in future books. And of course I look forward to Edith’s story! I love a reformed mean girl!
